A living soil, through its organic richness, contributes above all to carbon sequestration. It is perhaps the most important one of ways to reduce carbon footprint, essential in battling the challenges brought by climate change.
Our philosophy is not limited to the soils’ good health.
Beyond that, we are also working on other ways to reduce our carbon footprint through every aspect of our business. Our implication continues downstream from the wine production in order to cover all our trades.
The examples below highlight some of the ways we have reduced our carbon footprint:
We built a water treatment plant on the property in 2001 to treat our wastewater. After treatment, the water is clean enough to return to the environment and can even be sent directly to the Izaute River. This is done under the inspection and regulation of official third-party experts.
Rainwater, as well as the water used for cleaning bottles, is recovered, and reused for watering green spaces and washing part of our farm equipment, thus avoiding the use of drinking water. For hygienic reasons, we only use drinking water to wash equipment that comes in direct contact with grapes or wine such as harvesting machines, harvest transport tanks, presses, tanks, and the bottling line.

Irrigation is authorised, and even funded, in more and more wine producing regions around Europe and throughout the world, including Gascony. However, Domaine Tariquet has made the choice to not irrigate our vines, even during periods of drought. Our oceanic climate and the associated rainfall generally eliminate the risk of water stress on the vines. As a result, irrigation in our region is most often used to increase yields. This does not fit with our qualitative objectives, nor our self-imposed mandate to reduce our water consumption.
We recognise that wine production is not a primary agricultural crop, therefore, we believe that we have a responsibility not to increase our water consumption via irrigation.
